History

What we knew as Sonoma Kitchen & Bath showroom is now closed. It began it’s life in 1960 as Western Cabinet Distributors. It’s successful focus was the largest supplier of cabinets to builders and contractors serving the North Bay region of metropolitan San Francisco. There were other locations in the east bay as well. Owner Gerald Kowell has relocated the showroom within Santa Rosa and for a time they were Western Cabinets and Tile. When Mr. Kowell moved the business to it’s present location, 1480 Guerneville Road, Santa Rosa, in 1994, he was a stocking distributor of Diamond cabinets and used to receive freight cars full of cabinets right off the train tracks behind the building. As the business and market evolved, he took on more cabinetry lines, expanded a focus to homeowners and brought on more tile and other construction industry products.

In the late 1990’s Western Cabinets and Tile became a separate entity. Sonoma Kitchen & Bath become a wholly owned subsidiary of Superior Building Materials, also owned by Mr. Kowell. Mr. Kowell began to see a need for exceptional kitchen and bath design talent. To meet the expanding needs of it’s clients, he and his team began a larger focus on decorative plumbing and hardware and countertop surfaces.

In 2003 a major remodel was done to the 10,000 sq. ft. building. This remodel reduced warehouse space, increased the showroom and added offices for an expanding team of talented designers and staff to better meet the needs of their clients. Mr. Kowell, feeling confident in the team he has created, is still actively involved in the business from his home in El Dorado County where he lives with his wife Trisha Kowell. Product lines have continued to expand bringing on exceptional cabinetry lines in all values and price points, while expanding the countertop, plumbing and decorative hardware selections. Since 2007 there have been a return to adding fine quality tile, closet organizers and most recently lighting.

In January of 2014 the business closed and Mr. Kowell retired.

The designing is continuing to serve under Lee Greenlund.

Over the past 50 years and more, each transition has increased in service to the north bay counties with quality products, a variety of price points and, as always is tradition, exceptional quality design talent and personal service.
